Storming of Congress compared to 9/11 by former NATO official – ‘attack on democracy!’

James Stavridis, a retired US Navy Supreme Allied Commander, took to Twitter on Wednesday when dramatic scenes broke out at Capitol in Washington. As a result of the demonstrations, the joint session of Congress certifying President-elect Biden’s victory was suspended and forced into recess.

Mr Stavridis said the events unfolding on Wednesday in Washington will be “remembered” in history like the 9/11 terrorist attack.

He tweeted: “This is a 9/11 level event directed against democracy in our national history.

“We will remember where we were when we watched this unfold.

“Police, backed by DC National Guard, must establish control and hold on to it, and we must support them doing so fully.”

The attacks that took place on 11 September 2001, often referred to as 9/11, were a series of four coordinated terrorist acts by the extremist group Al-Qaeda against the US.

The incidents resulted in nearly three thousand fatalities and have been called the deadliest terrorist attack in human history.

On Wednesday President Trump supporters breached the Capitol, where Congress meet, on the day lawmakers joined to confirm Mr Biden’s poll victory.

According to reports, guns were drawn in the building and at least one person has been shot dead.

After reports broke of the incident, Mr Trump released a recorded video message on Twitter asking his supporters to leave the Capitol.

But he continued to make baseless claims that the Democrats stole November’s election.

He said: “I know your pain, I know you’re hurt.

“You have to go home now, we have to have peace… we don’t want anybody hurt.”

In a Twitter post, Mr Biden said: “America is so much better than what we’re seeing today.”

In a separate tweet, he added that the scenes at Capitol boarded on “sedition” and called for it to end.

“Let me be very clear: the scenes of chaos at the Capitol do not represent who we are. What we are seeing is a small number of extremists dedicated to lawlessness.

“This is not dissent, it’s disorder. It borders on sedition, and it must end. Now.”

Earlier on Wednesday, in a tweet Mr Biden called on the president to go on national TV to “fulfil his oath and defend the Constitution”.

He demanded an end to what he labelled as a “siege” of the Capitol building.

Calls for Donald Trump to be ARRESTED after ‘insurrection’ – ‘25th amendment now!’

Josh Venable, former Chief of Staff for Mr Trump’s Department of Education, also weighed in to condemn the President for the protests.

He said on Facebook: “If the Cabinet is not, right now, preparing to invoke the provisions of the 25th Amendment, it is a complete dereliction of their duty and a betrayal of their Constitutional oath of office. But I won’t hold my breath.”

Section four of the 25th Amendment says if Vice President Mike Pence and the majority of the Cabinet decide the president has become unfit to carry out the powers and duties of the office and they transmit a letter to Congress to that effect, then Mr Pence becomes the acting president and remains so unless and until Congress refuses to allow that transfer of power to stand.

Former Defence Secretary Mark Esper also said: “The perpetrators who committed this illegal act were inspired by partisan misinformation and patently false claims about the election.”
