Beautiful paintings from Iceland by Blake Greene – see this amazing art https://www.stuckiniceland.com/paintings-from-iceland/

I have many people in my social media feed that regularly share beautiful pictures from their travel from all over Iceland. These visions of Iceland from my friend remind me of how many wonderful places there are in this country. One of my favourite people in my feed is my friend Blake Greene, whom I once worked with at Iceland Travel. Blake is now the marketing manager of that fine company. Even though she has only lived here in Iceland for a few years, she has already travelled more in Iceland than many locals. Blake’s latest creative project is creating painting Icelandic landscapes on her iPad, and the results are stunning.
<figure id=”attachment_15610″ aria-describedby=”caption-attachment-15610″ class=”wp-caption alignnone”><img loading=”lazy” class=”size-large wp-image-15610″ src=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00003-1-768×1024.jpeg” alt=”Painting of Kerlingarfjöll in Iceland.” width=”768″ height=”1024″ srcset=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00003-1-768×1024.jpeg 768w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00003-1-225×300.jpeg 225w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00003-1-1152×1536.jpeg 1152w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00003-1-1536×2048.jpeg 1536w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00003-1-110×147.jpeg 110w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00003-1-585×780.jpeg 585w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00003-1-scaled.jpeg 1920w” sizes=”(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px”>
Painting by Blake Greene of Kerlingarfjöll.

Hey Blake, thank you for taking the time for the interview. Can you please give my readers a little background information?

Sure. I was born and raised in South Florida, and left at 18 to study history at university in the UK. After some years doing university in places around Europe, I made my way back to the USA and settled in the Washington, DC area.

My time in DC was great but the pressures of work and life there had me fantasizing about moving to Iceland and its beautiful, desolate landscapes. Luckily, I had a brother already living in Reykjavík and through several vacations, I had made some good friends here. Finally, in 2016, I decided to make the move a reality.

<figure id=”attachment_15606″ aria-describedby=”caption-attachment-15606″ class=”wp-caption alignnone”><img loading=”lazy” class=”size-large wp-image-15606″ src=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00004-1024×429.jpeg” alt=”Borgarfjörður Eystri – painting by Blake Greene” width=”1024″ height=”429″ srcset=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00004-1024×429.jpeg 1024w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00004-300×126.jpeg 300w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00004-768×321.jpeg 768w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00004-1536×643.jpeg 1536w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00004-2048×857.jpeg 2048w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/image00004-585×245.jpeg 585w” sizes=”(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px”>
Borgarfjörður Eystri – painting by Blake Greene

You have lived here in Iceland for a few years now. What are your perceptions of Icelandic culture and people?

Generally speaking, I think Icelandic people are exceptionally kind if a little shy. I know all experiences are different, but I was welcomed here with open arms and have made great friends and people I call “family.” As far as the culture goes, it is in many ways a hybrid of American and Northern European cultures.

However, personally coming from a place where there is high stress and high crime rates, I am always a little shocked at how trusting Icelanders can be of each other! I tend to be more suspicious of others, less trusting, and plan heavily to avoid risk. Whereas the locals tend to be more relaxed about pretty much everything. That has been hard to get used to.

Do you have Icelandic authors, musicians, or films you want to recommend to my readers?

I am a big fan of hip-hop/rap, electronic, and jazz music, and there’s a lot of great artists from Iceland performing in all these genres. As far as jazz goes, jazz pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs is probably a favourite.

What are your favourite places and activities here in Iceland?

Well, my favourite activity is getting out, exploring nature, and taking pictures on my phone! In 2020 alone, me, my boyfriend, and almost-three-year-old daughter Matilda took close to 30 road trips. Matilda loves to road-trip … she was built for it! My boyfriend is a professional photographer, graphic designer, and location scout – so he has a great eye and knows pretty much every place in Iceland. I am very lucky to have a nice team of fellow explorers.

One of the favourite places would have to be Mjóifjörður – an astonishingly beautiful fjord in East Iceland. I also love walks around Ásbyrgi and Kerlingarfjöll. But in all honesty, there are too many amazing and unique places in each region to name.

What is on your Iceland bucket list?

I would really like to go deeper into the Highlands with a vehicle that can handle the harsh terrain. The roads can get really dicey there.

<figure id=”attachment_15615″ aria-describedby=”caption-attachment-15615″ class=”wp-caption alignnone”><img loading=”lazy” class=”wp-image-15615 size-large” src=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Mjóifjördur-768×1024.png” alt=”Mjóifjörður – painting by Blake Greene” width=”768″ height=”1024″ srcset=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Mjóifjördur-768×1024.png 768w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Mjóifjördur-225×300.png 225w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Mjóifjördur-1152×1536.png 1152w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Mjóifjördur-1536×2048.png 1536w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Mjóifjördur-110×147.png 110w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Mjóifjördur-585×780.png 585w” sizes=”(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px”>
Mjóifjörður is stunning. Painting by Blake Greene

My boyfriend and I were lucky enough to get our hands on his parent’s red 1980s Mercedes RV last year – affectionately called the Eðalvagninn – which has taken us to some pretty amazing places. But not being a lifted 4×4 though means we have had our limits. So the goal is to get our hands on an RV that can take us a little further. Aspirationally, we’d also like to build a house out in the country so we can access nature a little better!

I saw you have started creating paintings from Iceland on your iPad with excellent results. Can you talk us through how that came about?

Yes! Well, I have always loved art history and to draw and paint, but since working full-time in sometimes high-stress jobs, having my daughter, a divorce, and a lot of life changes more generally, I had to put the art aside to focus on other things.

However, I was the lucky recipient of an iPad Pro for Christmas. So in the few weeks since Christmas, I have been really inspired by landscapes we have visited in the last year and have been producing digital paintings like crazy using my photos as a reference.

The real benefit to creating artwork on an iPad is there is no mess, no need for studio space, and I can take it anywhere. So it works really well with my lifestyle.

What advice would you give to those who are visiting Iceland for the first time?

My greatest advice is to explore beyond the beaten-path … within reason, of course – no need to risk your life. Try a guided tour of the Highlands or explore the Westfjords, you won’t regret it.

And if you have them, take the kids! There is truly no greater joy than to watch your child explore and enjoy nature. It teaches them to be tough, not afraid to get dirty and to respect the environment too.

(Why?)
Sun, 24 Jan 2021 12:25:33 +0000 Stuck in Iceland

2020 has been a strange year for all of us and difficult for many. We at the Stuck in Iceland family have been fortunate in our professional and personal lives during the pandemic. The gratitude we feel for that is immense. Of course, we are excited that life may return to normal, but we also hope that the world shall learn the pandemic’s lessons. For me, they are that science, good governments, and a robust publicly funded healthcare system is essential for our wellbeing. The swift development of vaccine gives me hope that a concerted global effort may solve the climate crisis. I also hope you, my dear reader, will be able to visit Iceland in 2021.

<figure id=”attachment_11820″ aria-describedby=”caption-attachment-11820″ style=”width: 1024px” class=”wp-caption alignnone”><img loading=”lazy” class=”size-large wp-image-11820″ src=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/into-the-glacier–1024×683.jpg” alt=”Go into the glacier and discover a new world.” width=”1024″ height=”683″ srcset=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/into-the-glacier–1024×683.jpg 1024w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/into-the-glacier–300×200.jpg 300w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/into-the-glacier–768×512.jpg 768w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/into-the-glacier–585×390.jpg 585w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/into-the-glacier-.jpg 1050w” sizes=”(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px”>
Go into the glacier and discover a new world.

Visit Iceland in 2021 and carbon offset your trip

I also hope that when travelling resumes, it will be slower and more deliberate than before. I hope that people will travel less often and spend more time at their destination. In this way, we shall minimize the environmental effects of travelling. I also hope that those who travel will offset the carbon footprint of their flying and travelling. Carbon offsetting by supporting financially, environmentally friendly projects is an effective way to combat the climate crisis. You will be surprised by how cheap it is.

Helping families save on tours in Iceland

The pandemic devastated the Icelandic travel industry, and this magazine is no exception. The number of readers is down 70% during the period March to December. I hope this bounces back, and I remain committed to keeping running this oldest indie travel magazine dedicated to Iceland. I am proud that over 700 thousand people have discovered Icelandic destinations and activities since the magazine’s founding in 2012. It is delightful to help thousands of people save on Iceland’s incredible experiences with my promo codes. I find it especially gratifying to hear that my promo codes are popular with families. Iceland should be a family-friendly destination, a remarkable place where people can visit to strengthen their familial ties through fantastic experiences.

Iceland is full of iconic places. One of them is Dimmuborgir lava field in the northeast of Iceland on the renowned Diamond Circle. If you are traveling in the area, it is a place you must visit. And what a region. In the neighbourhood, you have places like Húsavík, Lake Mývatn, Dettifoss Waterfall, Aldeyrjarfoss waterfall, Goðafoss waterfall, and the Hljóðaklettar lava field, which are similar to Dimmuborgir. It is truly a perfect region for road-tripping, hiking and exploring. Incidentally, I have created a Diamond Circle road trip plan, just for you!

<figure id=”attachment_15521″ aria-describedby=”caption-attachment-15521″ style=”width: 1024px” class=”wp-caption alignnone”><img loading=”lazy” class=”size-large wp-image-15521″ src=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/IMG_20200724_160623-1024×768.jpg” alt width=”1024″ height=”768″ srcset=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/IMG_20200724_160623-1024×768.jpg 1024w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/IMG_20200724_160623-300×225.jpg 300w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/IMG_20200724_160623-768×576.jpg 768w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/IMG_20200724_160623-1536×1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/IMG_20200724_160623-585×439.jpg 585w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/IMG_20200724_160623.jpg 2043w” sizes=”(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px”>
Dimumuborgir in the north east of Iceland.

Enter the dark fortress of Dimmuborgir

Dimmuborgir means dark cities; sometimes, people are more dramatic and translate it to “black fortresses.” It is a lava field that looks like a massive outdoor sculpture park. Volcanic eruption forged this natural sculpture park just over 2,000 years ago. The region is still very geologically active; indeed, one of my first childhood memory was being terrified by the glow of flowing lava near Mývatn, which was visible from my childhood home town of Akureyri. Falling ash did nothing to calm me down.

Stroll at your leisure and see all the trolls in the lava

A stroll through Dimmuborgir is delightful. There are so many different lava sculptures to admire, and there are several well-marked paths to choose from. We had a lot of fun meandering on the footpath and seeing trolls in every lava formation. The most famous lava structure is the cool looking Kirkjan (or ‘church’). Kijan is a tunnel resembling a church exterior – see the image at the top of this article.

<figure id=”attachment_15517″ aria-describedby=”caption-attachment-15517″ style=”width: 1024px” class=”wp-caption alignnone”><img loading=”lazy” class=”size-large wp-image-15517″ src=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/dimmuborgir-6-1024×768.jpg” alt=”Dimmuborgir lava field with troll faces” width=”1024″ height=”768″ srcset=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/dimmuborgir-6-1024×768.jpg 1024w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/dimmuborgir-6-300×225.jpg 300w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/dimmuborgir-6-768×576.jpg 768w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/dimmuborgir-6-1536×1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/dimmuborgir-6-585×439.jpg 585w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/dimmuborgir-6.jpg 2043w” sizes=”(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px”>
Dimmuborgir has many cool looking lava structures where you can see many troll faces.

Dimmuborgir was in Game of Thrones

Nearby is the Námaskarð pass, which bubbles and boils with hot pots, the Krafla fissure, and Grjótagá cave.

<figure id=”attachment_15516″ aria-describedby=”caption-attachment-15516″ style=”width: 1024px” class=”wp-caption alignnone”><img loading=”lazy” class=”size-large wp-image-15516″ src=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/namaskard-1024×768.jpg” alt=”Námaskarð pass near Lake Myvatn in the north east of Iceland” width=”1024″ height=”768″ srcset=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/namaskard-1024×768.jpg 1024w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/namaskard-300×225.jpg 300w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/namaskard-768×576.jpg 768w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/namaskard-1536×1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/namaskard-585×439.jpg 585w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/namaskard.jpg 2043w” sizes=”(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px”>
Evereything bubbles and steams at Námaskarð pass.

The Game of Thrones TV series featured Dimmuborgir and Grjótagjá fissure.

<figure id=”attachment_15515″ aria-describedby=”caption-attachment-15515″ style=”width: 1024px” class=”wp-caption alignnone”><img loading=”lazy” class=”size-large wp-image-15515″ src=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/grjotagja-1024×768.jpg” alt=”Grjótagjá was featured in a scene with Jon Snow and Ygrette in the Game of Thrones TV series” width=”1024″ height=”768″ srcset=”https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/grjotagja-1024×768.jpg 1024w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/grjotagja-300×225.jpg 300w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/grjotagja-768×576.jpg 768w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/grjotagja-1536×1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/grjotagja-585×439.jpg 585w, https://www.stuckiniceland.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/grjotagja.jpg 2043w” sizes=”(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px”>
People are usually not allowed to bathe in Grjotaagja but Jon Snow and Ygrette did it anyway.

Dimmuborgir was featured in a scene with Mance Rayder and his army, while Grjótagjá was the scene where John Snow and the wildling Ygritte had a “cosy bath.”

Yule Lads and black metal

For people in the north, Dimmuborgir is often considered the home of the Yule Lads. This belief is mistaken. We who live in Reykjavik know that Mt. Esja is the home of the Yule Lads. And, of course, death metal fans will recognize the Norwegian black metal band Dimmuborgir. It is safe to say that they are not for everybody, but you can call me a fan.

How to get there

Dimmuborgir is on the east side of Lake Myvatn. Drive on road 848 until you come to the exit to Dimmuborgir.
